When opportunity knocks:
Ross’ leadership journey

“The opportunities at Worley are endless. You just need to demonstrate the value you bring.

Ross Sheldon of Worley.

Since joining our team six years ago as a process engineer graduate, Ross Sheldon has found himself surrounded by opportunity. His career path has grown and changed in ways he didn’t see coming. Starting in offshore oil and gas, Ross moved into technical roles in green hydrogen, later transitioning to study consultancy and project management. Now a Senior Project Engineer based in Aberdeen, his role has evolved significantly. Each shift has shaped his career and brought him to where he is today; working towards becoming the kind of leader that makes a difference.

Expanding horizons

When speaking about a moment that made him feel like he was exactly where he was meant to be, Ross recalled a secondment to a client in Ireland. There, he worked on developing green hydrogen projects, hosting workshops and presenting to potential investors; showcasing the client’s projects and value propositions. “It was just unbelievable. It felt great – I felt like I was part of something cool,” he said.

One project that filled Ross with pride was his work on an offshore wind farm in Taiwan, which allowed him the opportunity to travel to Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam. But it was seeing the final structures in the fabrication yard that brought everything into perspective. “Just being able to stand there and see why we’re doing this – I was proud to see that.”

The impact of an open door

Ross highlighted the openness and support of his team as something that’s been crucial to his growth. He’s never hesitated to ask questions or seek help when he’s faced with knowledge gaps, knowing his colleagues and mentors are there to support him. That openness has helped him grow, navigate challenges and develop into a more effective leader. “Through their advice, I’ve learned how to lead and steer conversations better – and ultimately overcome obstacles.”

Ross highlights our culture as a driver for his ambition and day-to-day work. “We have an incredible open-door policy. We’re welcoming at every level of the business.”

Looking ahead

Ross is excited by the possibilities that lie within, and outside his immediate team, exploring potential career paths and becoming the kind of leader who gives back. His involvement with the global STEM network allows him to pay that energy forward and inspire others on their journey. “I like to carry the piano so that others can play it. The energy you bring to a room spreads – and you’ll get that back.”

Through his own ambition and the support of his team, Ross is continually inspired to grow his career and work to open doors for those looking down a similar path.
