A 20+ year career, built with purpose

“Worley gave me the opportunity to grow, to lead and to contribute to something bigger than myself. That’s why I’m still here.”

Our purpose is more than a statement; it’s the energy that unites our people across the globe. For Leandro José Rabay Lucas, that shared vision has been the foundation for a career spanning two decades and seen him grow from intern to national engineering leader.

Turning inspiration into action

Leandro’s fascination with engineering began in childhood. In 1994, a school visit from a classmate’s father introduced him to the workings of a hydroelectric power plant. The image of turbines spinning to generate electricity stayed with him, reinforced by the lessons he learned from his own father, an engineer who encouraged curiosity and hands-on learning.

By the time Leandro joined CNEC Engenharia SA in Brazil in 2005, later acquired by Worley, he was ready to immerse himself in the world of instrumentation and automation. “From the beginning, I could see it was an environment where people were committed not only to the work but also to each other,” he recalls.

One vision, many hands

That sense of unity is what Leandro values most about our team. Over the years, he’s contributed to major organizational changes from aligning Brazil’s operations with global standards to helping teams navigate mergers and new systems. “We are 45,000 people across the globe, but we are united by a common goal. There is always someone willing to help.”

From Engineer I to Senior Engineer, Discipline Manager, Project Manager and now Manager of Engineering for Brazil, Leandro’s path has been defined by challenges that built his expertise and resilience. He participated in engineering projects across various sectors, including field activities and critical projects such as the 14 gigawatt modernization of the Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Power Plant – a milestone that brought his childhood inspiration full circle.

He’s also invested heavily in his own multidisciplinary growth, completing multiple postgraduate programs and an MBA in Digital Business. “I still approach my work with the mindset of an intern. There’s always something new to learn,” he says.

Guiding the next generation

Today, Leandro leads a team of up to 400 engineers and designers, mentoring young professionals as they forge their own paths. “Your career at Worley can be built your way, as long as you stay curious and committed,” he tells them.

Looking back, he sees his career as living proof of what’s possible when an organization’s purpose meets an individual’s ambition. “Worley gave me the opportunity to grow, to lead and to contribute to something bigger than myself. That’s why I’m still here.”
