Delivering 1850km of pipeline from Azerbaijan to Europe

How we helped diversify Europe's gas supply through the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline project.

The ambitious Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) is a key section of the Southern Gas Corridor from Azerbaijan to Europe.

Customer challenge

The aim of TANAP is to bring natural gas from the Shah Deniz gas field and other fields in Azerbaijan to Turkey and through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline to Europe, forming part of the Southern Gas Corridor. It is one of the most significant and ambitious pipeline projects undertaken in the industry to date, diversifying gas supply to Europe.

Worley and TANAP were faced with many significant challenges in terms of the scale and complexity of this project, including the remote and rugged mountainous terrain, high seismicity, cold climate, high frost line down to 1.5 m, crossing of major rivers and many geo-hazards. Additionally, the 56" and 48" pipeline presented a unique set of challenges when determining the gas flow behavior and hydraulics due to the very long sections, large variations in altitude and ambient soil temperatures.

Our solution

The project was sanctioned by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and BP in 2013, and Worley was engaged to deliver EPCM services in 2014, providing key technical expertise and support.

As part of detailed design, Worley produced more than 21,000 detailed design deliverable documents across the full range of engineering disciplines. These formed the basis for the procurement, construction and commissioning activities on the project. Innovative design solutions and technological applications were used, including a 3D model, which brought the design of all disciplines together to ensure a fully functional, clash-free design for construction. The 3D model is available to use throughout the project lifecycle.

Our digital information management added further value through the use of proprietary platforms including ProjectSight. ProjectSight is a web-based application that enables real-time collaboration of the project data, making visible important information such as land acquisition, unexploded bombs, terrain, and other relevant Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data. Our systems automate the design of pipelines and gathering in GIS so all the pipeline data is handed over in a geospatially referenced format to support ongoing operations.

Value delivered

Worley was a key part of the successful delivery of the engineering project. Great focus was placed on assisting the customer so they could negotiate and award construction contracts, while thoroughly understanding the issues involved in the technical challenges of the project. Throughout the duration of our involvement in this complex project, we maintained the highest safety and quality standards.

Our global reach meant that we could assign more than 700 specialists in cross-country pipeline and station design to the project from Worley London, Ankara, and Mumbai. Since many sections of the pipeline were in remote areas inaccessible from existing roads, high-level comprehensive support and logistics analysis was required, and Worley’s experts provided this, too.
