PMC services for Lake Turkana Wind Power's Kenyan wind farm
How we erected 365 turbines in 362 days
Our ability to leverage global PMC expertise combined with local customer knowledge delivered Lake Turkana Wind Farm, Africa’s largest wind power project.
Customer challenge
The Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project is the largest in Africa, and one of the largest in the world in terms of number of turbines erected in one phase. This wind farm provides Kenyans with an additional 15 percent installed capacity. The wind farm is located in the remote environment of northern Kenya, inhabited by nomadic pastoralist tribes who roam freely to find grazing for their animals. No form of development had reached the area prior to this project, and Kenya has seen many failed or cancelled projects due to community opposition stemming from poor stakeholder management. The customer, who had not constructed, owned or operated a wind farm before, needed to integrate five EPC contractors for design and construction, while reporting against international standards as required by its international lenders.
Our solution
Our team in South Africa was contracted by the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) consortium in November 2014, to provide overall project management, engineering review and construction management services. We mobilized a group of expats and employed a number of locals, forming a cohesive team to manage the interest of our customer. Worley set up an office in Nairobi with our customer and also established a site camp to coordinate and oversee day-to-day construction. The combination of expats and locals has been a key to our success to deal with large international contractors, which use local sub-contractors and labor.
Value delivered
We are playing a major role in Lake Turkana – Africa’s premier wind power project, which further endorses Worley’s track record in the renewables sector. What’s more, we are able to make a positive difference to the lives of Kenyans – the output from the wind farm will power more than one million Kenyan households.
Our strong focus on localization helped ensure the surrounding communities benefited from this project, and we also placed particular emphasis on health and safety awareness, to ensure consistent standards across the project.
