A diverse career, grounded in possibility

“Anything that touches the ground needs geotechnical input. It’s diverse, challenging, and there’s always something new to learn.”

Josh Fairhall of Worley Consulting.

Josh Fairhall didn’t plan to be a geotechnical engineer, but once discovered, the challenge was too good to ignore. “I started as a civil engineering graduate chasing opportunity. Geotech stood out because no two problems are the same,” says Josh, now a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with Worley Consulting in Brisbane.

That curiosity has taken him from hands-on field investigations to leading complex design and construction projects across mining infrastructure, water dams, tailings facilities and renewables.

Growth backed by trust

Since joining our team, Josh has been encouraged to grow across all aspects of his career. “I’ve been empowered to lead, supported by mentors and trusted to deliver. Every project brings something new, technically and personally.”

That growth has now been formally recognized, as Josh is one of just 14 people globally – one of only two in Australia – selected for our 2025 Emerging Leaders Program. The 12‑month initiative is designed to unearth talent and fast-track the development of future leaders through strategic projects, mentoring and leadership learning opportunities.

“It’s humbling,” he says. “Being part of this program isn’t just recognition – it’s a chance to contribute to shaping the business while continuing to develop myself.”

Balancing challenge and purpose

With two young kids at home, Josh values the balance he finds in our culture of flexibility and support. “We step up for each other. That teamwork matters, especially when things get busy.”

He also values the recognition that comes from doing good work, “When people notice and celebrate your efforts, it motivates you to keep growing.”

A career with real world impact

Josh’s advice to those considering a career in the field? “If you’re curious, enjoy solving complex problems and want to make a real-world impact, this is the place to be. The learning never stops.”
