Nick Courtois
Director of Mining Automation and Technology
A common challenge when implementing autonomous mining technology is aligning complex operational, technological and organizational requirements across diverse stakeholder groups. We emphasize early alignment and structured engagement across these areas to ensure truly integrated operations outcomes.
Nick Courtois, Director of Mining Automation and Technology (MA&T) is dedicated to collaborating with customers to realize their automation and technology ambitions. Working out of Perth, Western Australia, he supports customers globally with the implementation and delivery of solutions that improve operational performance, enhance safety and work towards more sustainable operations.
From the field to strategic leadership
Since migrating to Australia in 2007, Nick has worked for or supported many mining companies, delivering consultancy services and leading advanced technology programs. Prior to joining our team in 2022, his roles spanned Autonomous Operations Safety and Training Superintendent, Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) Project Manager and Technology Support Manager through to Principal Technology Consultant and business owner for a market leading boutique automation company.
Leading high-performing technical teams
Nick provides strategic leadership to a team of subject matter experts (SMEs), helping customers define both current and future operational technology landscapes and supporting them in achieving their target state.
Working closely with both operators and technology providers, his team assesses technology suitability, establishes detailed operational requirements and supports structured implementation. “This approach ensures safe, efficient, and sustainable performance outcomes that enable our customers to fully realize the strategic and operational value of their technology investments,” he says.
Beyond technology supply
“Worley doesn’t design or supply autonomous mining technology equipment,” Nick clarifies. “The MA&T team provides independent and agnostic expertise to help customers navigate technology options, define operational requirements, design and specify overall system requirements and ensure successful integration and deployment of solutions supplied by OEMs and technology providers.”
Looking ahead
“One change I would like to see in the industry is a more consistent, long-term commitment to integrated technology and automation strategies that extend across assets and beyond individual projects,” he says. “A clearer, enterprise‑level approach would enable more efficient adoption of emerging technologies, reduce duplication of effort and cost and ultimately deliver safer, more sustainable and significantly more productive mining operations.”
